For the Nonbelievers

Just thought I'd hold myself accountable after that last post about Owen's ever-fleeting babyhood. Stop the presses, y'all, we've made sippy progress. After three or four attempts and dozens of thrown cups, I think he's starting to figure it out. Cold whole milk and everything. He even enjoyed this tasty beverage with a grilled cheese. I'm letting him grow up, like it or not. :)

PS: His birthday totally isn't until March 10. Mark my words, bottles WILL be given until the very last second. To be technical, I'll have until 11:46 pm.

Too Fast

I don't remember what it was like when Nathan gave up his bottle.

I know the night before his first birthday, I gave him the last one. When the sun came up, it was business as usual, other than the addition of a brightly colored sippy cup. I was proud that the transition was so easy, as I'd heard nothing but horror stories. I was happy and he was happy.

This time it's different. I don't ever want those big brown eyes to stop staring into mine for 5 minutes, 5 times a day. I think Nathan was slurping down his bottles in his high chair or dragging them around on the floor at 11 months, but not Owen. Owen reaches for me with his chubby arms and as I lift him, he instinctively lies back in the crook of my arm. Our eyes lock and we're the only people in the world. When the formula runs out, he throws the bottle (not an exaggeration), climbs down and starts to play. He's independent, this one, just like his big brother. But he's my baby, and he's growing up too fast.

This is not to say I won't make the switch in two weeks. Believe me, the cost of formula is reason enough. However, there just may be a time or two when he's found cradled in my lap with his big boy sippy. And I'm pretty sure he won't mind one bit. Have a great Saturday, everybody.

Little Linus

When Owen's Daddy laid eyes on this shirt in Children's Place, he about peed pants. That may be an exaggeration, but I like it. Needless to say, we snagged it, full price and all. As you've read, and likely witnessed if you've met the kid, Owen Charles Bauer is a blanky baby. Now he can look just like the coolest cartoon character to ever wag a lovey. Maybe even cuter. Probably.

I hope you guys are out and about loving this gorgeous weather today. Owen and I took a nice stroll in the park this morning and now (as you can see) we are taking pantless pictures in the living room. A complete day, if I do say so myself. Now it's time to get big brother from school and see what kinds of adventures we can get ourselves into. Happy Thursday!

While swinging in the sunshine this afternoon, Nathan was happy to spot and pick his first dandelion of the season. In true Sid-from-Ice-Age fashion, he pretended to munch on the delectable treat. To him, this little flower means longer days, warmer backyards, and more time outside. To me, it means planting.

I am ready for springtime. Seed catalogs are ordered and garden beds are plotted. With nice weather coming, I plan to dig weeds and turn soil in the next few days. I'll make my seed purchase soon and then... it's on. So will begin the 2012 Bauer Family Garden. It'll be the best year yet, seeing as how I'll have an extra (small) pair of hands around the farm. Have you picked your first dandelion yet? Happy Monday!

Side by Side

This is what my Saturday morning looks like. Sesame Street on the DVR, a microwave pancake, and a built-in buddy. The view here is pretty fantastic. How about yours?

Feels Like Home

The boys and I traveled to Forrest City this week to visit our favorite Mema. Nathan was pumped since he loves Mema's house almost as much as I did at his age. He drew pictures, played board games (with stellar sportsmanship, might I add) and completed the day by sitting on the dock.

We threw a few lines in, but didn't see a single fish. It didn't matter, though. Nathan was more concerned with tossing pecans, acorns, leaves, and twigs into the lake to see what would float. He hopped and jumped down the winding path that leads from that familiar brick home to the water. I took pictures that easily mirror those taken of me 20+ years ago.

The kids had a blast playing with Mema and I had a fantastic trip down memory lane. It's good to see the places that made you, especially when you can bring others and hope they're affected in the same way. Watching Nathan's face as dozens of acorns swirled to the lake bottom, I think we have success. :)

My Loves

Happy Valentine's Day to all the lovers out there. :) Today has been a wonderful day full of monkey balloons, messy candy, preschool love notes, and flowers. Nathan, who adores this holiday, popped out of bed when I whispered a sweet reminder. He was pumped to pass out his Spongebob valentines that he carefully addressed last night.

When we got to school, the kids had already finished their pink cupcakes. The teacher said each of them lay on their mats after lunch, eyes wide, while she set up for the party. Needless to say, "nap" time was cut short, and party time started early. We came home with a bag of loot and a goldfish or two for brother. Luckily, Nana was smart enough to send a box of Valentine's Nilla Wafers, so Owen was all set.

And don't think those Bauer boys forgot about mama. Valentine's Day is yet another perk to being the only girl in my noisy home. Nathan picked out the perfect pot of red tulips and my grown-up sweetie sent me a beautiful arrangement of daisies.

I love these boys so much and I feel so blessed to celebrate with Owen for the first time this year. The room in my heart grows with my family and, thanks to these guys, it stays full. I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful day celebrating each other and ruining your supper with chocolate. :)

Winter Came

After deciding that winter wouldn't come this year, snowflakes popped into the forecast. It didn't seem likely on the radar, so we went to bed thinking nothing of it. What we saw in the morning was nothing compared to last year's snow fest, but you couldn't tell by the boys' wide-eyed reaction. It was the first time for Owen to see the ground transform to a bright, smooth white. He sat at the window, pointing, until it was time to leave. Nathan was psyched to wear his new monster gloves to school and I was psyched to see it melt away by afternoon.

Other than a snow-filled Monday, there's not much news from the Bauer boys. We spent the weekend in Conway and had a great time indoors with Grammy and Poppy while Old Man Winter chilled the air. I've been planning Owen's first birthday party and Nathan's been planning for his favorite holiday (more on that tomorrow!) Owen is powering his way through antibiotics to clear another double ear infection, but it doesn't seem to slow him down. In fact, I'm not sure anything will. :) I hope you are having a lovely February and a happy Monday!

Good Morning

Just wanted to wish you good morning on a sunny Thursday. I also wanted to show you how this little bedhead greeted me today, standing in his crib. Little by little, he's gaining the courage to pull up on different things. I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before he lets go. :) Have a great one, y'all!
